Windows 2000 Resource Kit Tools
There are a number of Windows 2000 Resource Kit software tools available for free download from Microsoft. We'll discuss them briefly here. These utilities can help you streamline administrative tasks such as managing Active Directory, administering security features, working with Group Policy and Terminal Services, automating application deployment, and other important jobs. Nearly 300 such tools are included on the Windows 2000 Server Resource Kit companion CD.
These tools are designed to be installed and run only on Microsoft® Windows 2000. They are neither localized nor supported by Microsoft.
Adsizer.exe: Active Directory Sizer - [more info - download (1.2MB)]
This tool lets you estimate the hardware required for deploying Active Directory based on your organization's profile, domain information, and site topology.
User State Migration Tool - [more info - download (776KB)]
This command-line tool collects a user's documents and settings (state) before an operating system migration to Windows 2000 is performed and restores them after the installation. The ScanState command of the User State Migration Tool is run before installation to collect a user's state information. After the installation of Windows 2000 is complete, the LoadState command of the tool is run to place the user's state on the computer.
Appsec.exe: Application Security - [more info - download (99KB)]
This tool is a GUI-based application that allows an administrator in a multi-user environment to restrict the access of ordinary users to a predefined set of applications on the network. Enabling application security using this tool will cause the system to reject any attempts by ordinary users to execute a program that they are not authorized to use.
Drmapsrv.exe: Drive Share - [more info - download (86KB)]
DrMapSrv is a Terminal Services command-line tool that configures NET SHARE and NET USE client drives for Terminal Services server access.
Rdpclip.exe: File Copy - [more info - download (178KB)]
File Copy is an extension to Terminal Services server that allows you to copy and paste between server and client.
Sysdiff.exe: Automated Installation Tool - [more info - download (82KB)]
Using this tool, you can pre-install applications as part of an automated setup, including applications that do not support scripted installation.
Terminal Server Capacity Planning Tools - [more info - download (212KB)]
This suite of tools assists organizations with Microsoft® Windows® 2000 Terminal Services capacity planning. They allow organizations to easily place and manage simulated loads on a server. This in turn can allow an organization to determine whether its environment is able to handle the load that the organization expects to place on it.
