Controlling AutoUpdates

By default, AutoUpdate is set to download updates to your computer when you are online, but are not using your connection actively.

According to Microsoft the AutoUpdate feature will stop downloading as soon as you start using your connection, and will only resume when you stop using your connection (but are still connected to the Internet).

You can change this behaviour, and have more control over AutoUpdate. To do so, select Start > Settings > Control Panel > Automatic Updates. You will have 3 options:

  • Automatically download updates and notify me when they are ready to be installed
  • Notify me before downloading any updates and notify me again before they are ready to be installed
  • Turn off automatic updating. I will update my computer manually

The 2nd option is basically how Windows 9x works if you choose to install the AutoUpdate notification service from the Windows Update Web site, and I have set my AutoUpdate to behave that way.
